As this series opens, Tony Hart is teaching high-school, acting as a surrogate father-figure to his small god-son, Ben, and not really looking for a boyfriend. He’s fine with his quiet life, good friends and rewarding job. Then the murdered body of another teacher falls into the high school elevator at his feet, and Tony’s life gets a little too exciting.
Jared MacLean is a homicide detective, a widowed father with a young daughter, Anna, and deeply in the closet. But from the moment he meets Tony’s blue eyes in that high school hallway, Mac can’t help wanting this man in his life. However Mac isn’t the only one with his eyes on Tony. As the murderer tries to cover his tracks, Mac has to work fast or lose Tony, permanently.
The Life Lessons series follows Mac’s homicide cases and the progress of the relationship between Tony and Mac, as life and work intersect, sometimes violently. Three novels (with a fourth in press) and three free short stories trace the arc of two gay men trying to balance the demands of jobs and small children, and the expectations of coworkers and friends, while finding a way to be together. It’s not going to be easy, especially for Mac, but they’re determined not to lose one another. Of course, life may have other plans for them.
The first book of the series is Life Lessons, from MLR Press. You can find a list of all the series stories, links for the free short stories, and contact Kaje Harper on her website: http://kajeharper.wordpress.com/
